AILab: artificial intelligence, data science and intelligent systems
What if you really understood what lies behind AI?
You’re probably already using artificial intelligence tools in your daily life, without necessarily knowing how they actually work. And that’s precisely the question you should be asking yourself: how does a system learn from data? How do we know if a model is reliable? What are its limitations?
The AILab at 3iL Ingénieurs is an educational platform dedicated to artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning and intelligent systems. Here, you’ll gain hands-on experience with the methods, tools and infrastructure that are currently transforming the IT sector. Here, AI is not presented as an abstract or merely impressive technology in its own right: you’ll learn to understand data, choose a model, train an algorithm, evaluate its results, identify its limitations, deploy a solution and measure its real-world impact.
Learning to do, not only using
Machine learning is based on an idea that seems simple on the face of it: enabling a system to learn from data. But in practice, building a reliable model requires a great deal of rigour, and that is precisely what you will develop here.
You will learn how to collect data, clean it, prepare it, choose relevant variables, select an algorithm, train a model, and then measure its performance and interpret its results. You will also discover a fact that is often overlooked: the quality of an AI system depends as much on the data as on the model used.
You will develop practical projects, compare different approaches, and understand the trade-offs between accuracy, robustness, computational cost, explainability and ease of deployment.
Giving meaning to data, before talking about AI
Even before we talk about artificial intelligence, it is essential to know how to explore, structure and understand the available data. This is the role of data science, and you will practise it here using Python environments and tools designed for data analysis.
You’ll learn how to manipulate datasets, produce visualisations, spot trends, identify anomalies and build predictive models. These skills aren’t limited to any one sector: healthcare, industry, finance, transport, energy, cybersecurity, the environment, marketing or applied research. This will enable you to transform raw data into genuinely actionable insights, whatever field you go on to work in.
Deep learning: computing power at your fingertips
Here you have access to high-quality resources: GPUs, embedded AI boards, deep learning frameworks and computing power that can be harnessed for your projects. This enables you to tackle challenging topics such as computer vision, natural language processing, classification, detection, signal generation and signal analysis.
Deep learning requires suitable hardware resources and a sound understanding of model architectures. You’ll discover the constraints associated with training: computation time, dataset size, overfitting, hyperparameter selection, resource consumption and performance evaluation.
The aim isn’t simply to run an existing model: it’s to understand what you’re doing, why you’re doing it, and how to verify that the result obtained is genuinely relevant.
Practical projects, not theoretical exercises
The AILab is designed to support real-world projects. Here, you can experiment with practical use cases: image classification, text analysis, anomaly detection, recommendation systems, prediction, signal processing, conversational agents, computer vision and intelligent automation.
This project-based approach is essential, because AI only truly comes into its own when it meets a real need. A model may be technically effective, but it is completely useless if it is not suited to the context, incomprehensible to its users, or impossible to deploy correctly.
You will therefore work just like a future engineer: starting with a problem, understanding the data, building a solution, testing, measuring, improving and presenting your results.
AI Club, hackathons and independent projects
The AILab isn’t limited to supervised teaching. You can also extend the experience through independent projects, an AI club and an annual hackathon.
These formats allow you to go further, test your own ideas, work in a team and tackle open-ended problems. You’ll develop technical skills, as well as your creativity, time management, communication skills and your ability to quickly produce a working prototype.
Hackathons are particularly well-suited to AI: they allow you to experiment, compare different approaches and turn an idea into a working prototype.
Skills that companies are already looking for
The skills you develop at AILab are currently in high demand: data science, machine learning, deep learning, Python, data processing, embedded AI, LLMs, model deployment, evaluation, visualisation, and an understanding of the ethical considerations surrounding AI.
These skills can prepare you for careers such as AI engineer, data scientist, machine learning engineer, R&D engineer, AI developer, computer vision engineer, data engineer or innovation project manager.
But the value of AILab extends beyond specialised AI roles. In the future, most computer science engineers will need to understand artificial intelligence, even if they do not specialise in it. Knowing how to evaluate a tool, integrate a model or identify the limitations of a solution: this is a cross-disciplinary skill that you will develop here, whatever your career plans may be.

FAQ
Your questions, our answers
AILab enables you to work on artificial intelligence, data science, machine learning, deep learning, large language models (LLMs), embedded AI and intelligent systems.
Yes. The platform includes self-hosted LLMs, enabling you to address the technical, deployment, sovereignty and accountability issues associated with generative AI.
Data science aims to analyse and use data. Artificial intelligence uses this data, amongst other things, to train models capable of predicting, classifying, recognising, generating or automating certain tasks.
Yes. You can combine AI with robotics, the IoT, embedded systems, cybersecurity, cloud infrastructure or XR. That’s one of the main attractions of 3iLLab: it enables you to work on hybrid projects.
